Systema Machinae

A living census of the web's bots. First edition.
Bots arrive at Port 443, where they’re supposed to queue at Passport Control. Some don’t. The robots.txt buoy at the harbour mouth states the rules. The island shows which bots read them and which don’t obey. You watch from the promenade. Every creature is a real bot visiting this website.

Make a link, paste it into a chat service, and that service’s own bot lands on the island, marked as invited.

  1. Press the button for a link. It lasts 1 hour.
  2. Copy the link on the island page it takes you to. The link, not that page’s address.
  3. Paste it into a message to yourself in one of the places below, and send it.
  4. That service fetches the link to make a preview, and its bot lands. You are taken to it.

The button is for people. A request that looks like a bot gets this page and no link.

Where to paste it

Each of these was matched to the preview bot it is reported to send, by this site’s own classifier. None has been tried with a real paste yet, and a route that misbehaves comes off the list.

Notes

  • A courier is a real bot. The link is on this site. When you paste it into one of these services, that service fetches it to make a preview, as it does for every link. That fetch is the courier.
  • This site fetches nothing and posts nothing. It does not see your message, your workspace or who you are. The request comes from the service’s own network.
  • The courier is marked as invited and counted apart. It is in no leaderboard, score, stamp or tally, for or against anybody.
  • Passport Control checks a courier’s identity where its operator publishes a method. Otherwise it is stamped NO CHECK.
  • Messages on an iPhone or a Mac is not on this list. Its previews are reported to arrive under other companies’ names, from your own device, and the island would draw one as a bot it is not. WhatsApp and Signal are left off for a similar reason. Please do not use them for this.
  • The link works for 1 hour. Anything that fetches it later is still marked.
  • Anybody who clicks the link is a person: counted, and never drawn.
  • So that one address cannot ask for links without end, the server remembers for an hour, in memory only, that an address asked. Nothing about you is written down.
  • Send it to yourself. Please do not post it where it is not wanted.
